How EkPraat! handles your data

Who we are

EkPraat! is an Afrikaans learning app for South African learners, published by CJX Studio. If you have a question about your data, or want a copy of it, email us at support@ekpraat.co.za. We answer privacy requests within 30 days.

Children and this app

EkPraat! is built for school learners, including children under 13, and is treated as a child-directed service throughout. We do not knowingly build advertising profiles of children, we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and every advertising request the app makes is tagged as child-directed so that only non-personalised, G-rated ads can be served.

If you are a parent or guardian and want to see, correct or delete your child's information, email support@ekpraat.co.za and we will action it. We handle personal information under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and follow the same principles for learners outside South Africa.

What we collect

Account: your email address and display name. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address and name from Google — never your password.

What you tell us during setup: your learning goals, whether you are at school, your grade, your province, your date of birth if you choose to give it, and — if you are a learner — the Afrikaans mark you have now and the one you are aiming for. Every one of these can be skipped, and none of them is shared outside the app.

Learning activity: lesson progress, XP, streaks, hearts, gems, daily and weekly activity, your chosen avatar and colour, in-app notifications, and preferences such as your reminder time and daily goal.

Automatically: crash reports and basic app-usage events through Firebase Crashlytics and Google Analytics for Firebase, and an advertising identifier used by Google AdMob to limit how often you see the same ad and to detect ad fraud. On the Android app, Microsoft Clarity records how you interact with the screens you visit (taps, scrolls, session recordings) to help us find and fix confusing or broken parts of the app — Clarity masks sensitive on-screen content by default and does not receive your name or email address.

Advertising

The free version of EkPraat! shows ads supplied by Google AdMob: a banner on the browse screens, an occasional full-screen ad after a lesson, and an optional video you can choose to watch in the shop in exchange for a heart. Learners on a paid plan see no ads at all.

Because this app is directed to children, every ad request is sent with Google's child-directed and under-age-of-consent flags set, with personalised advertising switched off and ad content limited to a G rating. That means Google does not use your activity to target ads to you. Google still processes limited data — such as a non-personalised advertising identifier, approximate country and the ad itself — to deliver ads and prevent fraud. Google's own policy explains that handling at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

How the app uses that data

Firebase Authentication signs you in and keeps your session active. Cloud Firestore stores your profile, progress, notifications and synced activity. Cloud Functions run server-side features such as streak and XP recording, purchase verification and AI-backed help. Your grade, goals, level and marks are used to choose which lessons to show you and to build your study plan. Your province is used to place you on a provincial leaderboard alongside learners near you. Your date of birth is used to pitch content at the right level.

Payments

Subscriptions bought inside the Android app are handled by Google Play Billing. Subscriptions bought on the web use a PayFast checkout. In both cases the payment is processed by that provider and EkPraat! never sees or stores your card details. We receive only the confirmation needed to unlock your plan, and we verify every purchase with the provider before granting access.

AI features

If you use AI-assisted features, the prompts you send are relayed through EkPraat! backend services to our AI provider to generate a response. We do not send your name or email address with them. You can report an AI response inside the AI tutor so we can review safety or quality concerns.

Who we share it with

We use service providers to run the app: Google (Firebase, Cloud Functions, Play Billing, AdMob, Analytics, Crashlytics), Microsoft (Clarity, Android app only), PayFast for web payments, and our AI provider for AI features. They may only process your data to provide their part of the service.

We do not sell your personal data, and we never have.

Account deletion

You can delete your account from inside the app: Settings → Delete Account. This removes your Firebase Authentication account, your synced profile, lesson progress, in-app notifications and avatar preference. If you no longer have the app, use the public account-deletion request form. We verify ownership before deleting permanently. All progress is lost and cannot be recovered.

Your rights and how long we keep things

You can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it — email support@ekpraat.co.za. We keep your data only as long as we need it to run the service or until you delete your account, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. Crash reports and analytics events are retained on Google's standard schedule.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles data we will update this page and move the date at the top. Material changes will also be announced inside the app.
